What is the definition of muscular strength?
The maximum amount of force a muscle or muscle group can produce in a single contraction.
Define muscular endurance in the context of training.
The ability of a muscle or muscle group to perform repeated contractions against resistance over time.
What does FITT principle stand for?
Frequency, Intensity, Time, and Type. The four variables used to manipulate training stimulus.
Define progressive overload.
Gradually increasing the demands placed on the body during exercise to continue improving fitness.
What is the General Adaptation Syndrome (GAS)?
A three-stage model describing how the body responds to stress: alarm, resistance, and exhaustion.
What are the three planes of motion?
Sagittal plane (forward/backward), frontal plane (side to side), and transverse plane (rotation).
Define flexion.
Decreasing the angle between two bones at a joint, or bending a joint.
What is extension?
Increasing the angle between two bones at a joint, or straightening a joint.
Define abduction.
Moving a limb away from the body's midline or center.
What is adduction?
Moving a limb toward the body's midline or center.
Define internal rotation.
Rotating a limb toward the body's midline, also called medial rotation.
What is external rotation?
Rotating a limb away from the body's midline, also called lateral rotation.
Define circumduction.
Moving a limb in a circular motion, combining flexion, extension, abduction, and adduction.
What are fast-twitch muscle fibers?
Muscle fibers that contract quickly, rely on anaerobic metabolism, and fatigue rapidly. Used for power and speed.
Define slow-twitch muscle fibers.
Muscle fibers that contract slowly, rely on aerobic metabolism, and have high fatigue resistance. Used for endurance.
