What is the main idea of a text?
The most important point or central message the author wants you to understand.
What are supporting details in a text?
Facts, examples, or explanations that help prove or explain the main idea.
What does it mean to make an inference?
To figure out something that is not directly stated by using clues from the text and what you already know.
What are context clues?
Words or phrases nearby that help you understand the meaning of an unfamiliar word.
What is the difference between a fact and an opinion?
A fact can be proven true or false; an opinion is what someone believes or feels.
What is the author's purpose?
The reason an author writes something, such as to inform, entertain, persuade, or explain.
How do you summarize a text?
State the most important ideas in your own words, leaving out minor details.
What does it mean to predict what will happen next in a story?
To make a thoughtful guess about what will happen based on clues in the text.
What are character traits?
The qualities or characteristics that describe what a person or character is like.
What is the setting of a story?
The time and place where a story happens.
What are the main parts of a plot?
Beginning (introduction), middle (problem and action), and end (solution).
What is a theme in a story?
The central message or life lesson the story teaches.
What is a cause and effect relationship?
A cause is why something happens; an effect is what happens as a result.
What does it mean to compare and contrast?
Comparing means finding similarities; contrasting means finding differences between two things.
What is active reading?
Reading while thinking about the text, asking questions, and making connections.
