When reading a graph, what is the first thing to check before analyzing the data?
Check the axes labels for the quantities measured and their units (dollars, percentages, thousands, etc.). A mislabeled axis is a common trap.

The chart is compressed to exaggerate differences. A small real change looks like a huge jump. Subtract the axis baseline from each value to see the true scale.
How do you accurately read the size of a pie slice without a labeled percentage?
Visualize the slice as a fraction of the whole circle (1/4, 1/3, 1/8, etc.). Do not rely on the visual angle; use the legend or calculate from other given data.
A question compares data from 2020 and 2021. You notice the time intervals are labeled differently (Jan-Dec vs fiscal year). What should you do?
Stop and reread the question carefully. Ensure both data points use the same time period definition or adjust if the question specifies otherwise.
A multi-part question asks for the median of a dataset. How should you approach it?
First identify what the question is actually asking (median, mean, range, etc.). Check the answer choices to confirm. Do not calculate the wrong measure by accident.
A data table shows that sales rose when advertising increased. Can you conclude advertising caused the sales rise?
No. Correlation does not imply causation. Another factor (season, new product, competitor exit) might have caused both changes. Do not infer cause from the data alone.
You are comparing values from two different charts. How do you verify they are compatible?
Check that the units, time periods, and definitions are the same in both charts. If they differ, adjust before comparing or conclude they cannot be compared.
A complex table has both row headers and column headers with multiple subheaders. How do you read it without error?
Trace across the row header to the correct column, then down the column header to the intersection. Point your finger if needed to avoid skipping a row or column.
How do you quickly convert 0.045 to a percentage?
Move the decimal point two places to the right: 0.045 becomes 4.5%. Use this for percentage calculations when data is given as decimals.
A stacked bar chart shows components of a total. How do you find the value of one component?
Subtract the lower boundary of that component from the upper boundary. Do not assume each section starts at zero; stack order matters.
A graph includes negative values below the x-axis. What mistake is easy to make?
Forgetting that negative changes (losses, decreases) are below the axis. Read the sign carefully and do not treat all values as positive.
