What is a fork in chess?
An attack on two or more opponent pieces simultaneously.
Which piece is strongest at creating forks?
The knight, due to its unique L-shaped move.
What is a royal fork?
A fork attacking the king and rook or queen at the same time.
What is a pin in chess?
An attack on a piece that cannot move without exposing a more valuable piece to capture.
Define an absolute pin.
A pin where the pinned piece cannot move without putting the king in check.
Define a relative pin.
A pin where the pinned piece could move, but moving would lose a more valuable piece.
What is a skewer?
An attack forcing a valuable piece to move, exposing a less valuable piece behind it.
How does a skewer differ from a pin?
In a pin the valuable piece is in front; in a skewer it is behind and must move away.
What is a discovered attack?
An attack created when one piece moves and unblocks an attack from a piece behind it.
What is a double check?
A check in which two pieces attack the king simultaneously, usually from a discovered check.
What is opposition in chess endgames?
A position where two kings face each other with one square between them, and the player to move is at a disadvantage.
In a king and pawn endgame, what is a key square?
A square that if occupied by the attacking king guarantees a win regardless of the opponent's defense.
What does pawn promotion mean?
When a pawn reaches the opposite end of the board, it is replaced by a queen, rook, bishop, or knight.
When would a player underpromote to a knight instead of a queen?
To avoid stalemate or rarely to deliver checkmate in a specific position.
What is zugzwang?
A position where any move worsens a player's situation, and not moving would be better.
